Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q.'s)

Q: What do I need to bring with me to the academy?

A: Bring all the essentials: enough clothing for 5 days of activities (light colored clothing preferably due to summer heat), swimwear, towels, and all your personal care items. Bedding materials are also needed, (i.e. sheets or sleeping bag), as those are not provided. You will also need full turnout gear this includes hood, gloves, boots, pants, coat, and helmet with shield or goggles. Long socks or sweat pants to wear under your turnout pants.  You may also bring a fan as the rooms are not air conditioned.

Q: What are the sleeping accommodations like?

A: Sleeping arrangements will be at the Viterbo University dormitory facilities and a roommate will be assigned in your room with you.

Q: Will I need any money?

A: If you would like.  There are vending machines at the Student Union you can use.

Q: What will I be doing at this academy?

A: This is a physically demanding and very hands on experience dealing with everyday aspects of the fire service.

Q: Can I call home?

A: In the case of an emergency parents can be contacted otherwise you will have personal time during meals and at night.

Q: What is the weather typically like in La Crosse?

A: July weather is usually quite warm though some nights can be cool. Rain and thunderstorms occur occasionally throughout the month.
